2. What content can I expect to find?
8. How do I subscribe to the mailing list that generated them?
The archives are listing of email messages from the Bluebirds mailing list, dating back to the inception in 1993. The interface is just an HTML rendering of each email message, but is not a way to communicate with the list. The "New Message" and "Reply" buttons merely open you mail client and send email to the list. If you are not a list member, the message will be discarded by the server. To become a list member, see the section "How do I subscribe to the mailing list that generated them?" below.
What content can I expect to find?
The list is solely for the discussion of 1968 - 1973 Datsun 510 wagons, sedans, coupes and custom variants. Most postings deal with technical discussions or community focused events. That being said, the list is unfiltered and there are both off-topic (OT) and sometimes inappropriate discussions posted. Remember, the archives are unfiltered, so anything posted is now viewable, even if it is not what we originally wanted.
We are only separating by year. From the main index you can choose what year to peruse or you can search against all years. The original mailboxes came from various formats of mail servers. When parsed to create this archive, not all standard mail rules were followed and thus, some messages are out of order on date. The author view and the thread view work perfectly. There is cross linking between messages within the same year. Cross linking does not work on message threads that span over the New Year of each year. If you are following a thread that was still going on Dec 31 of that year, you will need to jump into the next year before you can continue. Do that by simply moving to the main index, choosing the following year, then showing the thread view and find your thread. Although this may be a bit of a hassle to a very few, it was easier than allowing the entire index of all years to be displayed at once on a single web page.
The archives are owned by the community that generated them. The server that runs the archives and the mail list is also owned by the community and will be utilized by any admin of the list or archive. The archives are true public domain. If you glean any knowledge from the archives, you might want to drop the author of the thread a note saying thanks. Original author emails can be found at the top of the post. Obviously, the older the post, the less likely that email is still valid.
The list administrator maintains the mail list and the archives. The list administrator can be contacted by sending email to postmaster at datsun510.com or currently derek at datsun510.com.
No. The archives up until the last few years were lost completely as the list changed administrators and hardware was swapped and failed. All of the archives through 2003 were donated by Sebastian Hill from Dime Quarterly (http://www.dimequarterly.com). This was the most complete set known to exist, but there are still gaps. The archives from 2004 on are complete.
You can use the search window at the top of any page in order to run a search against all the archives. Check out the Search Help page for specifics on using the proper syntax. You can also browse each year and just sort by thread to get a sense of what each topic represents.
